Houston, December 2017 -

The annual Community Quarterback Awards recognize Houstonians who volunteer at United Way agencies, and who exemplify leadership, dedication, and a commitment to improving our community.

kathy texansEach year, 10 finalists and a grand prize winner are selected from hundreds of nominations, and we are overjoyed to announce that Literacy Advance volunteer Kathy Stockton was named as a 2017 finalist. In addition to the prestige of the award, a check for $5,000 was presented to Literacy Advance by BHP and the Houston Texans, in Kathy's honor.

Some highlights from the nomination submission:

Kathy tutors high intermediate and advanced level English Language classes. She exceeds most tutors’ commitments by tutoring classes twice a week, in 12-week cycles.

She is an effective tutor who quickly builds trust and rapport with students from all over the world. She has a magical way of eliciting happy laughter from nervous learners when they break through language challenges and meet goals they dared to set just a few weeks before. Since Kathy agreed to share her secrets with new volunteers and became a tutor trainer about 5 years ago, she has created a small army of literacy champions.

Kathy is always responsive to learner needs and blends life skills with practical language help in a very effective way, all the while keeping her classes interesting and engaging – even after personally tutoring more than 350 learners! She is incredibly effective at helping each one identify their language and life goals, and uses insights from the goal-setting process to shape her lessons. She encourages her students to explore creative ways to express themselves.

kathy 1000 hoursKathy celebrates passing the 1,000-hour mark, back in 2013. She's added at least another 1,000 hours of volunteering since then and shows no signs of slowing down!

She is fiercely committed to the wellbeing of all students and understands that for new Houstonians, learning to speak English confidently and well is the key to their future success. Knowing this, Kathy invests in each of her students individually and is personally devoted to each student’s success.

Congratulations to Kathy, who truly does exemplify leadership, dedication, and a commitment to improving our Houston community!
