- Want to help graduates stay connected?
- Want to help out in the Wilcrest office?
- Want to give free books to kids?
- Want to spread the word about Literacy Advance?
Volunteers wanted for this evening of great fun!
Scrabble in the City is one of two fundraising events held by Literacy Advance every year. It's one of the most fun and most energy-filled evenings you can have!
Volunteers will be needed on the evening of Wednesday, May 3, to help at the event. We'll need judges (training provided in advance), runners, and other event helpers. More details are coming soon but please get in touch with Maxine to get in early with your expression of interest!
Can you lead Student Registration sessions?
Our Student Registration sessions are important first steps for any new adult student wishing to take free classes at Literacy Advance. In a 2-hour session, new students fill out basic paperwork, learn about Literacy Advance, and take a short placement test (CASAS appraisal) to help us work out their literacy level and place them in the correct class.
Student Registration sessions include a PowerPoint presentation, to add the crucial visual element for our students who struggle with English, and plain language paperwork. We also have translations of important information, with multiple languages available, allowing most students to take home a summary of the most important points in their first language.
We're looking for new leaders! Can you spare a few hours to help new students come aboard? Training is provided, and staff are always close by to help if there are questions. We hold multiple New Student Registration sessions per week, but how often you get involved is entirely up to you.
There's a training for new leaders coming up on February 23, so don't wait too long to get in touch if you're interested!
Looking for expressions of interest
Our Alumni group, for graduated ESL students, has been quiet of late - and we want to change that. We're looking for volunteers interested in either leading or helping coordinate this group.
Structure is flexible; we're hoping that the group could meet once or twice a month. In previous years, the group has met either for conversation or for a fun activity, such as a free day at a Houston museum, or similar.
We hope that leaders and helpers will have been involved as volunteer tutors at Literacy Advance, so if that's you, and you think this sounds interesting, please call 713.266.8777 and ask for Diana, our Transition Coach, or email her: email@example.com.
Can you help at the Wilcrest front desk?
Can you help us out in the new year?
Light duties (answering phones, greeting people as they come in), friendly atmosphere, and training provided. Spanish speaker preferred, but not necessary.
NOTE: You don't need to be able to do the full time listed - please just tell us what part of the time you could do! We're very flexible!
Most pressing needs as we plan our schedule for early 2017:
Tuesdays after 1pm
Wednesdays after 1pm
Thursdays after 1pm
If you can spend even a couple of hours a week with us, we’ll pour you a fresh cup of coffee! Please contact Maxine at 713.266.8777 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Volunteer for a Family Literacy Event!
Our Family Literacy program is already getting busy, and we always need volunteers!
Help us with literacy activities for the students (pre-kindergarten through 5th grade), distribute free books to the children, or register the families as they arrive.
Most events begin between 5pm and 5:30pm; volunteers arrive between 4pm and 4:30pm.
All volunteers will need to complete a Criminal Background Check before being involved (Literacy Advance will cover the costs for this).
- Thursday, February 23: Terrace Elementary School, 5:30pm - 7pm
- Tuesday, March 7: Sherman Elementary School, 4pm - 6pm
- Thursday, April 6: Parker Elementary School, 5pm - 7pm
- Thursday, May 4: Cedar Brook Elementary School, 5pm - 7pm
If you're interested in volunteering for an event, please contact us for more information, or call 713.266.8777 and ask to speak to Khushboo.
Do you think we're worth talking about?
We think we’re worth talking about!
We want to spread the word about our adult students and their many achievements, our dedicated volunteers and their hours of service, and the long-lasting good that can occur when the two get together.
Literacy Ambassadors connect Literacy Advance to the Houston community by inviting new people to Story Time tours, to spend one hour learning about Literacy Advance through the stories of our learners, our volunteers, and our many supporters.
