Scrabble in the City 2017

Fun-loving, outgoing volunteers wanted for this high-energy evening!

scrabble volunteer

Scrabble in the City is one of two fundraising events held by Literacy Advance every year. If you want to volunteer to be part of one of the most fun and energy-filled evenings around, and you can come the evening of Wednesday, May 3, let us know!

General volunteers are needed to help set up, welcome and greet guests, showcase silent-auction and raffle items, and for general assistance to create a memorable evening for all.

Experienced volunteer judges are needed to host and help keep the fun going for their assigned teams, and to provide guidance on rules and “score enhancers” during play as the competition heats up!

Volunteer applications are due Friday, March 17, DEADLINE EXTENDED to Thursday, March 23 - and volunteers must attend a training session.

Please see the Scrabble volunteer role description and the Scrabble volunteer judge role description for more information, including training dates, and then complete the online application before March 23!

Admin/Office/Student Help

Can you lead Student Registration sessions?

student registrationOur Student Registration sessions are important first steps for any new adult student wishing to take free classes at Literacy Advance. In a 2-hour session, new students fill out basic paperwork, learn about Literacy Advance, and take a short placement test (CASAS appraisal) to help us work out their literacy level and place them in the correct class.

Student Registration sessions include a PowerPoint presentation, to add the crucial visual element for our students who struggle with English, and plain language paperwork. We also have translations of important information, with multiple languages available, allowing most students to take home a summary of the most important points in their first language.

We're looking for new leaders! Can you spare a few hours to help new students come aboard? Training is provided, and staff are always close by to help if there are questions. We hold multiple New Student Registration sessions per week, but how often you get involved is entirely up to you.

Read a full role description here, and get in touch with Maxine, the Volunteer Manager, if you have questions or would like to get started: volunteer@literacyadvance.org, or 713.266.8777.

Alumni Group Leaders & Helpers

Looking for expressions of interest

alumniOur Alumni group, for graduated ESL students, has been quiet of late - and we want to change that. We're looking for volunteers interested in either leading or helping coordinate this group.

Structure is flexible;  we're hoping that the group could meet once or twice a month. In previous years, the group has met either for conversation or for a fun activity, such as a free day at a Houston museum, or similar.

We hope that leaders and helpers will have been involved as volunteer tutors at Literacy Advance, so if that's you, and you think this sounds interesting, please call 713.266.8777 and ask for Diana, our Transition Coach, or email her: ddelgado@literacyadvance.org.

family literacy

Volunteer for a Family Literacy Event!

family literacyOur Family Literacy program is already getting busy, and we always need volunteers!

Help us with literacy activities for the students (pre-kindergarten through 5th grade), distribute free books to the children, or register the families as they arrive.

Most events begin between 5pm and 5:30pm; volunteers arrive between 4pm and 4:30pm.

All volunteers will need to complete a Criminal Background Check before being involved (Literacy Advance will cover the costs for this).

Upcoming events:

If you're interested in volunteering for an event, please contact us for more information, or call 713.266.8777 and ask to speak to Khushboo.

Spread the word about literacy!

Do you think we're worth talking about?

ambassadors

We think we’re worth talking about!

We want to spread the word about our adult students and their many achievements, our dedicated volunteers and their hours of service, and the long-lasting good that can occur when the two get together.

Literacy Ambassadors connect Literacy Advance to the Houston community by inviting new people to Story Time tours, to spend one hour learning about Literacy Advance through the stories of our learners, our volunteers, and our many supporters.
