Literacy Advance Partners with Groupon G‐Team for English as a Second Language (ESL) Initiative

"Opening Opportunities" campaign to provide much-needed supplies and training for ESL classes

ESL class at Literacy Advance

HOUSTON, TX - Literacy Advance and Groupon's G-Team, the philanthropic arm of Groupon, announce the launch of a local campaign to encourage community members to donate funds that will provide supplies for Literacy Advance's free English as a Second Language adult literacy program.

The Opening Opportunities campaign will be available on Groupon Houston's G-Team page beginning on Tuesday, January 31 and running through Thursday, February 2. Utilizing G‐Team's collective action model, Groupon subscribers can pledge support for the campaign in increments of $10, with each $10 helping Groupon logooffset the cost of classroom supplies, books, and volunteer tutor training. For as little as $30 you can support one student for one month at Literacy Advance. Donors receive an added incentive to give Blue Willow logoNOW as the first 50 participants to redeem their donations will receive a half-off (50%) coupon from local literacy partner Blue Willow Bookshop.

"We are excited to employ the collective action model of G-Team to raise support for our ESL program at Literacy Advance," said Melanie Fisk, Literacy Advance Executive Director. "We look forward to creating new awareness for Literacy Advance as one of the local organizations in Houston to be featured on G‐Team."

100% percent of the G-Team campaign proceeds will be used to provide FREE literacy services and supplies to Literacy Advance students. Low and limited literacy is a major concern in the Houston community. In Harris County, 15% of Houston's adult population has less than a 9th grade education (Source: Memorial City Management District, Inventory and Database - 2007).

What does low literacy translate to on a daily basis? An individual at the lowest literacy level may be unable to read a medical prescription, write down a list of groceries, fill out a job application form or even interpret a street map.

Literacy Advance has been providing free adult literacy classes to the Houston community for more than 47 years. With the money raised from the Opening Opportunities campaign, the agency will be able to purchase additional classroom supplies and tutor training materials, which are vital components of successful, high-impact ESL classes. Each dollar raised will help Literacy Advance continue to carry out its mission to transform lives and communities through the doorway of literacy.
