Lyondell Chemical Company sponsored the 10th event in the Literacy Advance of Houston Champions of Literacy Series Thursday, January 25, 2007, featuring keynote speaker Oliver Luck, President and General Manager of the Houston Dynamo's Soccer Team. Larry Dierker served as Honorary Chair and Emcee.

Guests enjoyed a memorable evening at the Petroleum Club featuring testimonials from Literacy Advance students.

Luck, the former Houston Oilers player who is now President of the Houston Dynamo's Soccer Team, addressed the plight of many adults who struggle to read, write and communicate effectively in English. Emcee Larry Dierker, himself a Volunteer Tutor with Literacy Advance of Houston, believes there's a formidable solution through the Literacy Advance programs which help adults achieve their full potential as parents, workers, citizens and community members.

Said Dierker:

"By teaching the parent to read, the children increase their opportunity to share in the wonderful world of educational enlightenment. In addition to helping the adults pursue higher education and obtain better jobs, their children now have a mom and dad to read them bedtime stories."
