Literacy Advance honored Comcast and their commitment to literacy, and John Bourke, founder and president of Bourke and Associates and master trainer and principal associate of VitalSmarts. Comcast was also the Champions of Literacy Underwriter for the event.

John Bourke discussed Literacy Champions and Influence Strategy, holding the crowd's full attention as he showed how influencers in the community can join efforts to effect real change, and outlined the forces that can hold us back or help impel us toward a truly literate community.

Literacy Advance learners and tutors mingled with guests, talking about the many positive effects free English classes have had, and continue to have, upon their lives and the lives of so many others in Houston.

The crowd was also impressed with former student Anna's from-the-heart speech, as she outlined her confusion and dislocation upon first coming to the United States four years ago, and her growing sense of self-confidence and independence as her ability to communicate grew. Attendees showed their appreciation with a standing ovation for Anna.
